Alice Paul Chapter to guide women running for office

The chapter’s May 9 program will take place at First Baptist Church in Moorestown.

Have you ever thought about running for political office? Are you inspired — but perhaps intimidated by the thought of organizing and financing a run for even local office? Come to South Jersey Now, Alice Paul Chapter’s May 9 program “A Woman’s Guide to Running for Political Office” at First Baptist Church in Moorestown at 7:30 p.m. and meet four women who will share their campaign experiences — positive and negative — and their views of how gender impacts electioneering.

All of the women received financial support from our own ALICE’S List, a non-partisan fundraising network to support feminist, pro-choice women in local New Jersey elections.

Panel participants include:

  • Anna M. Evans, a published poet and translator, who holds master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering and Fine Arts. Evans is vice-president of an import company. Her first political venture was an unsuccessful bid for Hainesport Town Committee. She is currently Chair of Hainesport Democrats.
  • Melinda Kane graduated from SUNY Geneseo and is a teacher, small business owner and Gold Star mother. She is active with organizations serving military families and veterans and won election to the Cherry Hill Council.
  • Joanne Schwartz is a semi-retired health care administrator and former probation officer who has served as a volunteer and board member for various community agencies over the years. She was Mount Laurel Fire Commissioner from 1993–96 and was later elected Burlington County Freeholder. She holds an MA from Seton Hall University.

The panel will be moderated by Gina Marie Santore, who was elected to the Woolwich Township Committee in 2017. She holds a MPS from The George Washington University and studied at Rutgers’ Eagleton Institute of Politics. A member of SJ NOW Alice Paul chapter, Gina Marie serves as the VP of Administration and coordinator of ALICE’s List, and is a member of NOW-NJ’s PAC.
