Shawnee High School students compete in budget challenge

The students practiced several real world money management skills

Petaccio, Monica McBride, Ellie Lill, Jessica Hooker, Megan Moore, Derek Martin and Corey Ott are all in the top 10 percent.

From Jan. 18 to March 29, Shawnee High School students taking a personal finance class with Debra Bunn and Michael Jackson participated in a nationwide online learning experience/competition in budgeting called Budget Challenge, sponsored by H&R Block. By participating in the H&R Block Budget Challenge, they learned and practiced many real world money management skills such as paying bills, managing expenses, saving money, investing in retirement and more.

There were 33 Shawnee students nationally ranked in the top 10 percent out of approximately 30,000 students participating nationwide. The top scorer was Gavin Euksuzian with a rank of 102/30,000. Those in the top ten percent include Euksuzian, Corey Ott, Monica McBride, Kalina Bradley, Hank Scheffler, Dillon Ferrari, Hannah DeBerardinis, Eric Dackis, Jake Carvin, Nikki Petaccio, Wynter Henry, Megan Moore, Cassie Bodendorf, Jake May, Ellie Lill, Kyle Etter, Rebekah Feinberg, Ethan McGinley, Autumn Keane, Paige Gehin, Matt Ross, Nick Riley, Dan Falzone, Aryelle Dewberry, Emma Di Gesu, Toni Marmo, John Dias, Ashley Vernon, Steve Snyder, Bryce Dunleavy, Kevin DelGiorno, Jessica Hooker and Derek Martin.

In addition, Debra Bunn’s personal finance class scored in the top 10 of all of the classes playing in the nation for the third year in a row. Her other class was ranked 16th in the nation. All of the students participating are congratulated for successfully completing the simulation.
