Girls ages 10 to 16 invited to coding event at Rowan College at Burlington County on March 17

Officials describe the event as the “perfect opportunity” for girls who are curious about finding a future in the world of coding.

Local girls ages 10 to 16 are invited to join a Google “Made with Code” party at Rowan College at Burlington County on Saturday, March 17.

The “Made with Code” party is sponsored by the college along with New Jersey State Sen. Dawn Marie Addiego and Burlington County Freeholders Kate Gibbs and Linda Hughes.

Officials describe the event as the “perfect opportunity” for any girl, ages 10 to 16, who is curious about finding a future in the world of coding. No prior coding experience is needed to attend.

The three local leaders will be on hand for the event, which takes place from 8:30 a.m. — 12 p.m. at Laurel Hall Room 320 on the college’s Mt. Laurel Campus.

“Coding and computer technology are job industries growing as fast as any industry in the country, but these well-paying jobs are too often dominated by men. It’s time for girls to get in the game and become the future of coding,” Addiego said.

Participants will learn about how coding is used through various career landscapes, from art to sports, fashion, medicine, science and more.

“Knowledge of coding can open up an endless amount of doors. We’re excited to provide girls a head start, so they can go on to knock those doors down,” Gibbs said.

The event also features a screening of “Hidden Figures,” the Oscar nominated movie based on the true story of three female, African-American NASA mathematicians — Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson — and their contributions to the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.

Following the movie, attendees will participate in a discussion on the movie, be treated to refreshments and then break off into groups for coding projects.

“In Burlington County, the opportunity to excel in STEM related fields is right at your fingertips. Rowan College at Burlington County offers limitless opportunities for women to flourish in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math,” Hughes said. “We thank the college for hosting this event that will help create a new generation of women coders.”
