Weekly Roundup: VCSJ member recognized as Citizen of the Year, WTHS students prep for “Into the Woods” musical

Washington Township citizen Gregory Davis was recognized as Citizen of the Year by the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce, and Washington Township students have been practicing for their upcoming spring musical “Into the Woods,” which will run from March 8 through March 10 at the high school. Washington Township local named Citizen of the Year

Volunteer Center of South Jersey board member Gregory Davis has been recognized by the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year. Davis has served on the VCSJ’s board for roughly 12 years, and was president for four. Aside from his involvement with the VCSJ, Davis is also a father of two daughters, who are also passionate about volunteering. “No matter what you like doing, there’s something you can do to improve the community,” Davis said.

Washington Township High School heads ‘Into the Woods’

This year, WTHS students will be performing their version of the 2014 Disney film, “Into the Woods,” a show that has proven to be no easy feat for students, according to vocal director Joseph Zachowski. The community is invited to attend the shows, which will be held at WTHS, from Thursday, March 8 through Saturday, March 10. “They should come and see these kids — in their community — do this unbelievable thing,” director Abigail Molotsky said. “They should support the arts in their community.”

Free wound care program at Heggan Library on March 6

Join Dr. Brian Smeal, medical director of the Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at Jefferson Health’s Washington Township campus, for a free program about wound care at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, at the Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library. The free program is sponsored by Jefferson Health — New Jersey’s PrimeTime, a free health and wellness program for active older adults in South Jersey, and is open to all community members.

Woman dies in hit-and-run accident

A Washington Township man has been charged with causing the death of a 44-year-old woman in a hit-and-run motor vehicle collision early Saturday on the southbound shoulder of Route 42 near the Ganttown Road intersection, Washington Township. Nicholas Jahn, 34, is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide by falling asleep while driving, second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal crash and third-degree endangering a victim. The incident is being investigated by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office and the Washington Township Police Department.

Staff and students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary celebrated Read Across America on Dr. Suess’s birthday this past Friday, March 2. Guest readers from the Washington Township community and school district read different books — many of them written by Dr. Seuss — to their assigned classrooms, and followed up by talking to students about the importance of reading.
