TBS Hazak to hosts art workshop on March 15

The workshop will be held with artist in residence Rabbi Matthew Berkowitz.

Temple Beth Sholom Hazak will host a workshop with artist in residence Rabbi Matthew Berkowitz on Thursday, March 15, at 1 p.m. This event is free and open to the community.

The workshop will examine “Seventy Years of Israel Through Contemporary Israeli Art.” The history of modern Israeli art begins in late 19th century Europe with rise of Zionism and continues to this very day. We will understand the journey of Israeli history through the parallel development of a new Jewish language of the visual arts. For more information please contact Phyllis Goldstein (856) 566–3373.

Berkowitz is the director of Israel programs for JTS and cofounder of Kol Ha-Ot, a program that explores the arts and Jewish learning.

On March 16, at 6:15 p.m., there will be Shabbat services followed by dinner with a discussion of “From Samuel the Prophet to Herzl the Visionary: The Roots of Modern Zionism” The journey of modern Zionism is an echo of a biblical revolution. Delve into the storyline to understand the Israelite and Jewish desire for political and social stability and the quest for a peaceful homeland and refuge. Turn to the prophetic words of Theodor Herzl and see to what extent his vision dovetails with the biblical revolution. There is a $36 per person charge. On March 17 at 9:30 a.m. there will be a Torah discussion at Shabbat morning services, Parashat Vayikra: From Sacrifice to Seder, Understanding a Rabbinic Revolution

On March 18, at 9 a.m., there will be Passover University featuring elective session: “Imaging and Imagining the Four Children.” The event kicks off with a keynote address at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., enjoy Project Yahad a program for individuals with special needs and their families. Taking place at 11:30 a.m. is “From Word to Wonder: Haggadah Through the Prism of Art” The event begins with a defining narrative of the Jewish journey, with Akeidat Yitzhak, “the Binding of Isaac” — showcasing a brilliant visual interpretation composed by contemporary artist David Moss. Identify core elements of sections of the haggadah, assign a color to each element, and then create animated collage pieces.
