Weekly Roundup: Zumbathon fundraiser, Cub Scouts to admit girls

Orchard Valley Middle School hosted a Zumbathon for Humanity event to raise funds for local families in need, and Washington Township Cub Scouts Pack 220 will serve as a pilot for allowing girls to join the organization. Get caught up on last week’s stories in the Weekly Roundup.

On Feb. 20, The COW project partnered with the middle school’s Future Acts club — a community service club — for “Zumbathon for Humanity,” an event that would both allow the community to show off their best dance moves and help raise money for local families facing serious medical conditions. “I think in Washington Township, we have a really strong tradition of service, so people are always very generous and willing to give their time,” Future Acts advisor and OVMS teacher Madeline La Voe said.

Girl Scouts can join Township Cub Scouts

Washington Township Cub Scouts Pack 220 has recently been chosen as a pilot to allow girls to join the organization. So far, roughly 60 girls and parents expressed interest. About 10 registered online, and, according to pack committee chair John Colligan, the goal this year is to have about 15 to 20 girls join.

Husband shoots wife, then himself at Jefferson’s Rehabilitation Unit

A 74-year-old woman of Mullica Hill, who was being treated at the Jefferson Health Care Center’s Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Unit on Egg Harbor Road in Sewell, was shot this morning by her husband in an isolated incident at the facility. The husband then fatally shot himself.The isolated incident occured at the 60-bed sub-acute rehabilitation center.

Eighth-grader takes first place at CRMS Geography Bee

Student Tyler Mason won first place at Chestnut Ridge Middle School’s Geography Bee, allowing him the opportunity to take a qualifying test, which determines which 100 students across the state of New Jersey move on to the State Bee on April 6.The winner of the state Bee wins an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the Bee’s national championship round May 20 to May 23. The national champion will garner several prizes, including a $50,000 college scholarship and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
