Signal Hill students collected over 3,000 books for underserved kids

They made donations with the BookSmiles organization.

The Signal Hill Husky Service Team of Signal Hill Elementary collected 3,663 books over the past month through BookSmiles, an organization aiming to provide books to underserved children in South Jersey.

The following is a press release from Signal Hill Elementary School:

The Signal Hill Husky Service Team is a group of teachers and third, fourth and fifth grade students that volunteer their time to help others in the community. Each month we try and think of a new way to help others.

This month’s service project was to collect new and gently-used books that would be donated to Booksmiles.org as well as other local organizations.

Larry Abrams, a teacher in Lindenwold High School, is the founder of Booksmiles.org, and we couldn’t think of a better service project than helping children in a town not too far away.

We reached our school-wide goal of collecting 1,000 books within the first week. In all, Signal Hill collected 3,663 books, which happens to be BookSmiles largest donation from any school so far.

The books for adults, all 293 of them, will be donated to residents in Camden through a pop-up library. Some 3,370 of the books were donated to BookSmiles.

The students also donated their time to decorate bookmarks to accompany the books.

We were thrilled to share our love for reading this month!
