Mayor’s Column: Mayor Mignogna discusses upcoming Citizens Police Academy

The third annual course kicks off on March 8.

In an ongoing effort to partner with our community to keep our families safe, the Voorhees Township Police Department will host its 3rd Annual Citizens Police Academy. The Academy will begin on March 8 and will continue most Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., concluding with a graduation ceremony on May 17. The exact schedule will be distributed to accepted applicants.

The training will take place at our police headquarters and several off-site locations. The course will offer our residents an inside look at the training and behind the scenes activities that make the Voorhees Police Department function in a professional, effective and efficient manner on a daily basis.

The course will cover firearms simulator training, crime scene investigation, mock crime scene, a tour of our police headquarters, patrol, investigation bureaus, K-9 unit demonstrations, including a meet and greet with our police dogs, police use of force, police Stress, central communications center tour, traffic unit, mock car stops, internal affairs, body worn cameras, community affairs, school safety and domestic violence.

The academy will host up to 30 Voorhees residents, 18 years old and older. Applicants will be required to successfully pass a background examination including a warrants check, NCIC, driver’s license check and NJ Interstate Criminal History check. Those who are accepted will be notified via email. Selected applicants must also complete a waiver of liability form.

Our community members who have attended previous academies report having a wonderful and educational experience. They learned about community policing and had some fun along the way.

Residents can apply for the Citizens Police Academy by visiting our police website at www.vtpd.com.

Due to the high interest level, the deadline for applications has been pushed back to Feb 16 at 5 p.m.
