Cherry Hill West wrestling falls short in sectional final

The Lions lost to Highland Regional High School in the South Jersey Group IV championship.

Cherry Hill West’s Xavier Barker came out on top in the opening match of Friday’s South Jersey Group IV championship between the Lions and Highland.

Cherry Hill High School West wrestling came up just short in Friday night’s South Jersey Group IV championship against Highland Regional High School, as the Lions fell to the Tartans, 35–32.

The first half of the meet was close as Cherry Hill West and Highland exchanged the lead back and forth. Pins from Jayson Peralta at 195 pounds and Max Sullivan at 285 pounds helped give Cherry Hill West a 16–12 lead after six bouts. Highland then took control of the match late, winning five of the next six matches to clinch the win.

In addition to Peralta and Sullivan’s wins, Cherry Hill West also got a major decision wins from Xavier Barker at 160 pounds and John Howe at 126 pounds. The Lions will be back in action as districts begin across the state next Friday.
