Kathryn D. Maynes of Cherry Hill and formerly a longtime Haddonfield resident, passed away on Feb. 1, at the age 86. She was the beloved wife of the late J. David, who passed away on Dec. 9; loving mother of Kathleen Blasingame, Patricia Maynes, both of Little Rock, AR, J. David Maynes, Jr. (Carlene) of Dayton, OH, Carolyn Battaglia (James) of Virginia Beach, VA; Mary Patz (James), Maureen Whittington (Timothy) both of Severna Park, MD; and Christopher Maynes (Patricia) of Haddonfield; cherished grandmother ofĀ 17.
Mrs. Maynes, the only child of Catherine and David Dugan, grew up in Burlington with many dear cousins. She graduated from Immaculata College in 1953. Mrs. Maynes was an administrator and board member at The Hand Rehabilitation Foundation and coordinated The Philadelphia Meeting, an annual symposium which brings together an international faculty of hand surgeons and therapists.
In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Maynes, along with their Roberts Avenue neighbors, decided to inspire Haddonfield with patriotism and neighborliness in light of the Vietnam War flag burnings and the treatment of returning veterans. The group was inspired to create a 20ft. x 40ft. American flag to be carried in the Haddonfield Independence Day parade. A skilled seamstress, Mrs. Maynes organized the sewing of that flag which stretched across Kings Highway. Eighty neighbors marched, carrying the flag down KingsĀ Highway
āparade routeā. Thousands in the crowd applauded, wept, and cheered. Roberts Avenue continues that annual parade march today, more than 40 years later. The flag, āsince retired, traveled around the globe including a trip to Hawaii and a trip to a Boy Scout Jamboree inĀ Japan.
Mrs. Maynesās family will receive friends on Thursday, Feb. 8, 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., at Christ the King RC Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 p.m. Interment is private. Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral School Scholarship Fund, 2907 Federal St., Camden, NJ 08105 (www.sjprocathedral.org)
