Opinion: Cherry Hill doctor concerned about Medicaid cuts

Dr. Leah Ziskin explains the issues that could come with cuts to Medicaid.

Editor’s note: This is a letter to the editor that was submitted to the Cherry Hill Sun.

As a parent, physician, and an advocate for persons with developmental disabilities, I am deeply concerned by the suggestion of cuts to Medicaid. For millions of Americans, especially those persons with disabilities, Medicaid is a lifeline to health and well being.

In particular, some persons with disabilities not only have difficulty taking care of their teeth but they and their caregivers also have difficulty obtaining dental care. We know that taking care of our teeth, starting in childhood, leads to healthier lives. Without regular dental care, teeth may be lost, nutrition may suffer, and secondary infections may ensue.

For some persons with disabilities, even simple dental procedures may require sedation or anesthesia. In some cases the type of procedure may require that it be performed in a surgical center or hospital. If the procedure is unusual or complex, this also adds to the cost.

If the amount of Medicaid funds is cut, funding for dental services is likely to be reduced. Many persons would be asked to pay out-of-pocket for care. This would be out of reach for most persons and their families. The limited number of providers, currently providing care to persons with disabilities, is also likely to be reduced. Without good dental care, quality of life would be further reduced for these vulnerable people.

Please join the effort to maintain Medicaid for those who can’t always speak for themselves and for services most of us take for granted.
