Author, TV producer Abigail Pogrebin to visit M’kor Shalom next month

Pogrebin will speak about her book, “My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew,” at a special event on Feb. 25.

Author and former TV producer Abigail Pogrebin will be the special guest speaker at Congregation M’kor Shalom on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. as part of the adult education committee programs. She will speak about her book, “My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew,” which was a finalist in the 2017 National Jewish Book Award. Pogrebin has an impressive background and has written several books as well as articles for Newsweek, New York Magazine, The Forward, Tablet and The Daily Beast.

Pogrebin’s book is personal, insightful, humorous and compulsively readable. To deepen her own understanding of the Jewish Year, she explored the Jewish holidays and documented her experiences first in a series in The Forward, and then in her book. Throughout her Jewish year, she is guided by an extraordinary group of teachers — rabbis from all denominations — who provide not only the historic foundation for each holiday, but also make them relevant to her life today.

Abigail Pogrebin is the author of three other books. Formerly a television producer for PBS and CBS-TV, she is immersed in the Jewish community in New York City. She moderates her own interview series at The JCC in Manhattan and is the current President of Central Synagogue in New York. She is the daughter of Letty Cottin Pogrebin, co-founder with Gloria Steinem of Ms. magazine, and co-founder with Marlo Thomas of Free to Be You and Me.

Pogrebin will autograph copies of her book, available for purchase at the event, following her presentation. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Registration is available on the synagogue’s website www.mkorshalom.org.

This program, presented by the adult education committee, was made possible by generous donations from Stefanie and Steve Cohen, Gail and Dick Donner, Barbara and David Rothberg, Marcia and Keith Waldman and the Helen and Leon Weinberg Scholar-in-Residence Endowment Fund of Congregation M’kor Shalom.

For more information, contact Marcia Waldman at marciawaldman@verizon.net, Gail Donner at AdultEducation@mkorshalom.org or the synagogue office at (856) 424–4220.
