Evesham Police offer tips to fight phone scams

Evesham Police say the department has recently been receiving numerous calls regarding phone scams.

The following information comes from the Evesham Township Police Department:

Evesham Police officials say the department has recently been receiving numerous calls regarding phone scams.

According to police, victims have been getting phone calls stating a family member has been arrested and needs bail money. Police say scam callers will tell victims to wire money or put money on gift cards. Also, police say residents are receiving calls saying that they owe money to the government.

Police are offering the following tips to help residents fight phone scams:

  • Phone number — If a resident receives a text or email claiming to be from their bank, do NOT call the phone number that is provided. Whenever needing to discuss banking details, always call the number that is printed on the back of one’s debit or credit card to ensure the number is legitimate.
  • Security details —Residents should never reveal security details such as full passwords or PIN codes over the phone. Bank will not ask for online account password over the phone. Banks may ask residents to answer a preset security question, but never to repeat a password.
  • Be vigilant — Never assume that a text message or email is genuine. Scammers can spoof phone numbers and email addresses to make them look official. Don’t click on links within these messages. Instead, always type the website address into a web browser or call the phone number located on the back of one’s card.
  • Trust one’s instincts — If a text or email seems suspicious, delete it immediately. Follow up by calling the company using the trusted phone number on the back of one’s card.
  • Don’t feel pressured — If the person calling is using pressuring tactics to have a resident reveal them sensitive data, stay calm and refuse. Just hang up the phone and call the company’s trusted number to follow up with the issue.
