Cherokee High School Girls Basketball collecting gently used shoes to help charity fight poverty

Cherokee Girls Basketball the Lady Chiefs Hoops Association want 150 or more pairs of new or gently used shoes for the Soles4Souls charity.

Members of Cherokee High School Girls Basketball are collecting 150 or more pairs of new or gently used shoes for Soles4Souls, a non-profit that creates jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world.

According to the Cherokee High School Girls Basketball and the Lady Chiefs Hoops Association (LCHA), one person’s unwanted shoes can help provide meaningful opportunities that many in developing nations need.

With that in mind, Cherokee Girls Basketball and the LCHA have launched a shoe drive to collect 150 or more pairs of new or gently used shoes.

The shoes that the group collects this month will be delivered to Soles4Souls, a non-profit social enterprise that creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. Founded in 2006, the organization has distributed more than 30 million pairs of new and used shoes in 127 countries.

According to Cherokee Girls Basketball and the LCHA, The World Bank estimates that approximately 900 million people, 400 million of whom are children, live on less than $1.90 per day. Millions of these children don’t have access to adequate footwear resulting in significant ramifications for their health and well-being. Meanwhile many adults don’t have access to sustainable employment.

Cherokee Girls Basketball and the LCHA say that Soles4Souls not only provides short-term relief through providing brand new shoes and clothing donated by retailers and manufacturers, but also creates economic impact and keeps unwanted textiles out of landfills. All of the LCHA’s donated shoes will be distributed to the organization’s micro-enterprise programs that create jobs in Haiti, Honduras and other developing nations. The resulting revenue will help fund the free distribution of new shoes and clothing in the U.S., Canada and developing nations around the world.

Now through Jan. 31, supporters are encouraged to bring new or used shoes of any kind to Cherokee High School South (during school hours), 198 Country Farms Road (on the porch), or 25 Old Republic Lane (by the garage).

The LCHA is a volunteer organization that supports the girls basketball program at Cherokee High School through various events and activities. The association provides opportunities for the girls to work together off the court, raise their social awareness, and develop as young leaders in the community. Fundraising is the primary means of financial support for the program, specifically through its scholarship program for graduating seniors. The association honors those dedicated young women who have exhibited sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and community service during their four years at Cherokee.
