Parks & Rec. trying to spike winter interest in fitness with volleyball clinics

Adults and children can get fit this winter with a volleyball league or clinic.

By: Amy Filippone, Dept. of Parks & Recreation

There’s a great way to stay warm and fit during the winter months — volleyball for adults and children. Find the league or clinic that works for you and go to www.moorestownrec.com for further information and to register.

  • The Adult Co-Ed Volleyball League begins Jan. 11 for sixteen weeks. Matches will be held at Moorestown High School on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 10 p.m. You can enter as a team (five or more players, minimum of two women), or if you’re looking to join a team, contact Cyndi Britton at (856) 914–3093 or cbritton@moorestown.nj.us.
  • The grades five through nine volleyball clinic for beginner/intermediate players will take place on Jan. 5 through March 2. The clinic is held on Fridays from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the Church Street Recreation Center. The clinics will stress the fundamentals of play through drills. No previous experience is necessary. Girls and boys will learn techniques for passing, serving, setting and basic hitting.

Instructor John Grossman has 15 years coaching experience with players from eight to 18. John played professionally indoors and outdoors for more than ten years. He currently coaches a high school team in Pennsylvania and is the technical director for Cherry Hill Volleyball Club where he also coaches two teams. He subscribes to volleyball best practices and volunteers with the USA Volleyball Olympic team.

  • The High School volleyball clinic for all skill levels will take place from Jan. 12 through March 2. Held on Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the William Allen Middle School. The clinic will stress fundamentals including passing, serving, setting and hitting to allow players to compete at a high school level of play.

Instructor Chris Rizzo has been a volleyball coach and player for more than a decade. He has taught at the high school and club levels and has taken his coaching from indoor to outdoor grass/sand volleyball. He has a passion for making volleyball fun and working on basic skills as well as high impact/repetition skill improvement.

So after the cold months, you’ll be ready to take advantage of the two sand volleyball courts located at Jeff Young Park. The courts were a joint effort between Moorestown Parks and Recreation and Kennedy’s Cause Inc.
