Last February, The Sun profiled one student who stood out in On Campus. After mulling over different options for his future after high school, Cherry Hill High School East 2017 graduate Tyler Parsons decided to accept an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.

“I’m looking forward to a whole new experience,” Parsons said. “You’re going to a brotherhood with a whole bunch of guys and girls with relationships and bonds that will never be broken.”

There were a number of reasons Parsons decided to attend the Naval Academy. There was a family connection, as both of Parsons’ grandfathers had served in the Navy.

“Being able to wake up every day and being safe in our country, we owe that to our troops serving our country,” Parsons said.

A cross country and long distance runner for the Cherry Hill East track team, Parsons was also attracted to Navy’s running program. Dan Helfand, a 2015 graduate of Cherry Hill East, is a distance runner for the Midshipmen and Parsons had visited with the team multiple times before making his decision.
