Fourth-grader leads project to send Christmas cards to young Texas shooting victim

Whitman Elementary School fourth-grader Aaron Glennan led the project to cheer up Ryland Ward, 5, of Sutherland Springs, TX.

Pictured are Whitman fourth-graders with the Christmas cards they plan to send to Ryland Ward in Texas. Glennan, who came up with the idea to send the cards, is pictured in the center in the gray sweatshirt.

Whitman Elementary School fourth-grader Aaron Glennan recently approached Principal Ray Anderson with an idea for community service. At church one Sunday, Glennan heard about a 5-year-old boy, Ryland Ward, who was injured by gunfire during the Sutherland Springs, TX, First Baptist Church shooting.

Glennan asked Anderson if Whitman, as a school, could participate in the Christmas card writing campaign to cheer up Ward, whose only Christmas wish while recovering in the hospital is to receive the cards.

Whitman has certainly done its part. All cards and postage fees are being paid by Glennan’s mother’s employer, Del Val Pools and Spas, in support of his wish to bring cheer to someone many miles and states away.
