Weekly roundup: Giving Trees collect gifts for local children in need

Every school in the district, along with the Municipal Building, has a giving tree decorated with alias names of local children in need. The community is invited to select a child, purchase a gift and help brighten the season for those in need this holiday. Also, Washington Township Police Department will have increased patrols targeting holiday theft and impaired driving through the end of the year. Washington Township police increase DUI, theft patrols for holiday season

According to Chief of Police Patrick Gurcsik, the Washington Township Police Department has made more than 100 driving under the influence arrests so far this year. This holiday season, Washington Township will have increased DUI enforcement patrols through New Year’s Day to prevent drug and alcohol-impaired driving. On another note, Gurcsik said the department has implemented a mandatory “special order” directing officers to specifically patrol shopping centers during the holiday season.

Giving Trees make the ‘magic of Christmas’ possible this holiday season

What started as a small charitable event, collecting nearly 50 gifts for local families and children in need during the holiday season more than 20 years ago, has grown to one of Washington Township’s largest service events known as the Power of Giving project. This year, through donations collected by the community and members of the school district, a record 260 children in need will receive gifts this Christmas.

Veterans honored on Pearl Harbor anniversary

The USS New Jersey battleship was once again occupied by World War II military members on an overcast morning last Tuesday. Local veterans and numerous others were honored during Camden and Gloucester counties’ annual Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration that was held on the deck of the BB-62, the most decorated warship in the United States.
