Gloucester Township Apartment Fire Displaces Residents Leaving One Fatality

The Blackwood Falls Apartment complex caught fire early yesterday morning.

The following is information from the Gloucester Township Police Department:

On Sunday, Dec. 3, at approximately 2:54 a.m., the Gloucester Township Police Department was dispatched for a report of an apartment fire in the Blackwood Falls Apartment complex located at 227 Washington Ave in building “D” in Blackwood.

Gloucester Township Police units arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the apartment. First responding personnel from Blackwood Fire Department Station #84 and Gloucester Township Police Officers made entry into the smoking apartment and encountered heavy smoke conditions.

Two adults and one juvenile were immediately rescued from the apartment. Several adjacent apartments were occupied at the time of the incident, and all of the occupants were evacuated safely by police.

One fatality was reported. One adult and one juvenile were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Firefighters from Blackwood (Station #84), Chews Landing (Station #82), Blenheim (Station #83), Glendora (#81), Pine Hill (#62), Washington Township (#10–1), Deptford (#93) and Erial (#86) were on location and quickly contained the fire to one apartment.

Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Unit assisted with the investigation. Emergency Medical Services from Gloucester Township, Washington Township, Deptford, Sterling, Virtua Paramedics and Jefferson Stat assisted with medical treatment.

18 residents from eight apartments were displaced by the fire and will be receiving assistance from apartment management and the American Red Cross for temporary shelter. It is expected the majority of the residents will return to their residences today.

There were no reported injuries to any other residents of Blackwood Falls Apartments or first responding personnel.

Victims names are being withheld pending notification to next of kin.

The incident is under investigation by the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety and the Gloucester Township Investigations Bureau.
