Residents voted in the 2017 General Election to determine who would earn the open seats on Harrison Township’s Committee, while the community looks ahead to one of the biggest holiday events of the year, Lights on Main. Independents finish ahead in Harrison Township Committee election
Harrison Township Committee Independent incumbent and Mayor Louis Manzo will retain his seat for another year to fill the one-year, unexpired term, to which he was appointed to in October 2016 to fill the position of John Williams who had resigned. According to unofficial results from the Gloucester County Board of Elections, Manzo took the lead with 54.64 percent of votes ahead of Republican challenger Lisa Rotte, who received 41.18 percent of votes. Independent Julie DeLaurentis also finished ahead against Republican challenger Jacqueline Vigilante to take the place of Committeeman and Deputy Mayor Dennis Clowney for the full-term, three-year seat. The unofficial results report DeLaurentis received 53.78 percent of votes against Vigilante with 46 percent.
Lights on Main extravaganza kicks-off the holiday season on Nov. 25
Mullica Hill’s historic district on Main Street will welcome more than 5,000 residents and visitors for the annual Lights on Main extravaganza on Nov. 25. With an earlier start and additional attractions, this year’s event is expected to provide holiday entertainment for all ages. This year, Lights on Main will begin an hour earlier at 5 p.m. to accommodate set-up time, as well as allow for families of younger children the ability to enjoy all the event has to offer at an earlier convenience. The event held on North and South Main streets, between Woodland Avenue and Folwell Lane, will feature holiday celebrations, local food vendors, small business shopping, live entertainment and more.
Committee enters PILOT agreements with local businesses, provides incentives for redevelopment
At last week’s meeting, the Harrison Township Committee voted to enter a Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement with Naples Ristorante and Mullica Hill Surgical Arts Urban Renewal Entity, LLC. Although both companies would be part of PILOT programs, the agreements vary greatly in individual tax abatements and benefits.
