Katz JCC to expand Rock Steady Boxing classes

The new program, which began in September, will be expanded due to popular demand.

The Katz JCC in Cherry Hill started offering Rock Steady Boxing for individuals with Parkinson’s disease in September 2017, hosting 40 participants during its inaugural run. The class is one of many classes and programs hosted in the JCC’s new Richard M. Klein Center for Wellness.

Rock Steady Boxing, a nonprofit organization, is the first boxing program of its kind in the country. Rock Steady Boxing empowers people with Parkinson’s disease to fight back by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing based fitness curriculum. Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the perceived capabilities of the participant. Discovery of a cure may be many years away, but in the last seven years, there is evidence that progress is made in all stages of the disease by those participating in the RSB program.

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. Nearly one million people in the U.S. are living with Parkinson’s disease.

“Due to the great success and overwhelming feedback from the community of the initial offering of Rock Steady Boxing at the JCC, we are excited to announce that we are expanding the program by adding both new sessions and time slots and an additional certified instructor to the lineup,” said Jayne Miller-Morgan, JCC Assistant Fitness Director.

Registration for the Katz JCC’s Rock Steady Boxing is now open and spots are filling up quickly. Classes that still have availability are Wednesdays starting Dec. 20 from 1 to 2: p.m. or 2:15 to 3:15 p.m., Thursdays starting Nov. 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays starting Dec. 2 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.
