Evesham Police charge suspect for allegedly abandoning a drug-overdose victim

Police remind community members that the law allows individuals to report drug overdoses without the fear of being arrested.

The following information is on file with the Evesham Township Police Department:

On Oct. 17, at 11:10 a.m., Evesham Police say a witness contacted the Evesham Police Township Department after the witness allegedly observed two males carrying an unconscious male from a car and abandoning the male inside a residence in the unit block of Bartram Road.

According to police, the two males allegedly then fled the area in their vehicle without calling for medical assistance.

Police say officers immediately responded to the scene and located an unconscious male in the foyer of the residence who was barely breathing.

According to police, officers quickly administered multiple doses of nasal Narcan, an opioid overdose-reducing drug.

Within seconds, police say the male positively reacted to the medication by regaining consciousness and normal breathing. The male was subsequently transported to the hospital for further medical treatment.

During a follow up investigation, police say investigators were able to identify one of the males who had abandoned the victim.

That male, age 34, of Cherry Hill, was charged with third-degree endangering an injured victim.

According to police, the State of New Jersey Overdose Prevention Act ensures that those seeking medical attention for a potential overdose victim, as well as the victim, will be immune from prosecution.

Police say the law allows individuals to report drug overdoses without the fear of being arrested.

Evesham Police officials say they strongly encourage community members to immediately dial 911 when confronted with this type of situation.
