South Jersey Pops orchestra keeps Halloween going with ‘Phantoms and Shadows’ concert on Nov. 5

The orchestra is set to keep the eerie spirit of Halloween living on through Nov. 5 at its fall concert at Lenape High School.

The South Jersey Pops is set to keep the eerie spirit of Halloween going through Nov. 5 when the orchestra presents “Phantoms & Shadows” as its fall concert.

The show, which opens the orchestra’s 48th season, will be the first for Robert Bradshaw as the Pops’ full-time music director.

Officials say the show will go beyond the expected, haunting tunes of “Phantom of the Opera,” by including works from “Les Miserables,” as well as foreboding classics like Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” and even some pop favorites from The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel.

Other selections on the program include the theme from Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful,” the love theme from “The Godfather,” and “Funeral March of a Marionette,” better known as the theme from the “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” TV series.

After serving as guest conductor, Robert Bradshaw was named musical director in September, picking up the baton from Robert Schiavinato. Bradshaw, the founder and director of the Haddonfield School of Music, has been directing musical ensembles for 15 years.

In addition to his performances with the South Jersey Pops Orchestra, Bradshaw has performed as a violinist with numerous orchestras and ensembles at venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Lincoln Center in New York, EPCOT Center in Walt Disney World, Universal Studios in Orlando, The Wells Fargo Center and The Spectrum.

“Phantoms & Shadows” also features guest vocalist Elio Lleo, who has appeared in performance halls such as Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

“This is the orchestra’s time of year to get a little macabre with our music, but there will be many fun, crowd-pleasing selections too, whether you were weaned on ‘The Godfather’ or ‘Fantasia.’” South Jersey Pops president Christian Stebbins said.

South Jersey Pops presents “Phantoms and Shadows” Sunday, Nov. 5, at Lenape High School, 235 Hartford Road in Medford.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 3 p.m.

General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or online at www.southjerseypops.org/events.

Children under 13 are free.

Subscriptions to all four concerts for the 2017–2018 season are available for $30.

Founded in 1969, the South Jersey Pops is a 60-piece community orchestra based in Burlington County. Comprised of professional and volunteer instrumentalists, the orchestra brings stylistic musical entertainment to South Jersey.
