Weekly roundup: WTHS alumna wins fourth WNBA Championship title

Washington Township High School class of 1984 graduate Cheryl Reeve completed her eighth year as head coach for the Minnesota Lynx with their fourth WNBA Championship title in seven years. Also, Mayor Joann Gattinelli and council recognize township children who raised more than $2,000 for hurricane relief in Texas, while McGruff the Crime Dog was appointed as the Oct. 11 meeting. WTHS to WNBA: Minnesota Lynx Head Coach Cheryl Reeve looks back on her roots

Washington Township native Cheryl Reeve has completed her eighth year as the head coach for the Minnesota Lynx with her fourth WNBA title in seven years when the Lynx defeated the Los Angeles Sparks in the fifth game of the finals on Oct. 4, an accomplishment that is unprecedented in the league. Looking back to her time on the Washington Township High School girls basketball “South Jersey team of the decade” in 1984, Reeve said it was the people who demanded the best of her in high school that led to her journey of championships.

‘Super star citizens’ recognized, council appoints McGruff the Crime Dog at meeting

At last week’s council meeting, Mayor Joann Gattinelli recognized the four children of Washington Township who organized a bake sale and lemonade stand to raise donations for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. McGruff the Crime Dog was also sworn in as an honorary member of the Washington Township Police Department to spread crime awareness and personal safety to the residents and youth of the community.

Halloween curfew begins at 8 p.m. on Oct. 28

The Washington Township Halloween curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Saturday evening, Oct. 28, and ending on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. Children will be trick-or-treating on Tuesday, Oct. 31, starting at 3 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Anyone under the age of 18 in violation of the curfew will be transported to Washington Township Police Department Headquarters and released to the custody of their parent / guardian.
