Students in the Washington Township Public Schools’ special education and autism classrooms recently took part in a Community Based Instruction outing to Chick-Fil-A in Washington Township. The visit is part of the district’s newly adopted program, where students are visiting various locations throughout the community to further develop and generalize various life skills.

Some of the skills focused on during the Chick-Fil-A visit, which teachers had been working on through task analysis, role play and modeling, included: self-advocacy; using visual supports; money; ordering pre-select choices and planning an order using visual aids and supports; waiting/taking turns; washing hands/hygiene; reading (menu/bathroom signs); clean up/throw away trash; locate missing items (napkin, fork, etc.); and eating/basic table etiquette.

Throughout the outing, district paraprofessionals took data on the level of supports and prompting that was needed to complete the above skills. Chick-Fil-A gave various students a “behind the scenes tour” of the kitchen, and other students were given a special necklace to wear, shown how the drive thru works, how to make milkshakes and how various food items are prepared.
