Officials with the Lenape Regional High School District are commending those at the district’s four schools who have taken the initiative to support the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

According to the district, most of the activities have been student-driven and have quickly garnered widespread support from students, staff and community members.

At Cherokee High School, teacher Amy Bodine also returned a NCAA Big 12 Conference grant that she had received, asking the Big 12 instead to gift it to a school in need in Texas.

“I am thankful to all of our students, staff and community members who have helped our district’s efforts to support the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the recovery efforts currently underway in Texas and Florida,” said LRHSD Superintendent Carol Birnbohm, Ed.D. “We try to instill a sense of civic responsibility within our students, and these efforts show that we are succeeding and that our staff and community members are serving as positive role models to help reinforce this messaging. I could not be prouder.”

Next month, the Sequoia Alternative Program will host a Vintage Car Show at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, with a rain date of Nov. 4. All proceeds will benefit the United Way Harvey Recovery Fund, which supports local communities in Texas, Louisiana and the surrounding areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. Entry is $20 per car, with check-in beginning at 9 a.m. For more information, contact Ben Lamberson at blamberson@lrhsd.org or Gene Warrick at ewarrick@lrhsd.org.

In addition to efforts at Cherokee, students and staff at Lenape, Shawnee, and Seneca High Schools have also done their part to support hurricane victims.

At Seneca, fall student-athletes have collected $1,522 to donate to the American Red Cross, with most of the funds raised coming from the athletes themselves.

At Shawnee, the Student Council has teamed up with Students Actively Concerned to collect money to donate to relief efforts for both hurricanes.

In addition, staff will donate money in exchange for the opportunity to wear denim for a day.

At Lenape High School, there was a fundraising drive to support the victims of both Harvey and Irma, with a big push for donations throughout the week of Sept. 11. Efforts helped the school raise a total of $2,200 in one week.
