George W. Smalley reports the Battle of Antietam

Hear of the Civil War’s bloodiest day at the Margaret E. Heggan Library on Sept. 21

The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library in Washington Township will present “George W. Smalley Reports the Battle of Antietam” on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.

George Washburn Smalley was in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862. While covering the Civil War’s bloodiest day for his newspaper, he attached himself as an unofficial courier and found himself in the thick of the fighting. As a result, he scooped his competitors and wrote what is considered to be the finest battlefield account of the entire war.

Join the library for this first-person presentation by Civil War reenactor and author Ben Carlton.

This program is open to everyone. Advance online or phone registration is required. Please visit www.hegganlibrary.org, or call the library at (856) 589–3334, to reserve your spot.
