Support UMDF and those fighting Mitochondrial Disease at Challenge Grove Park
On Saturday, Sept. 23, the Delaware Valley Chapter of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation will be hosting the Energy for Life Walkathon at Challenge Grove Park in Cherry Hill. Registration and basket raffles begin at 9 a.m. The walk steps off at 10 a.m.
Mitochondrial Diseases occur when the cells are unable to convert food into life-sustaining energy. It was once thought of as a “rare” disorder; however, the latest research shows that 1 in 200 individuals may carry a genetic mutation that could develop into a Mitochondrial Disease.
For most, it is an inherited genetic condition, but for others, especially adults, the disease may be triggered by damaged mitochondria. Research has also found significant links between mitochondrial disease and many more common diseases such as Autism, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and some cancers. There is no cure for mitochondrial disease– yet. The goal of treatment is to halt the progression of the disease using a tailor made combination of supplements and medication.
The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation provides support, education, and hope for better treatments and ultimately a cure for Mitochondrial Disease.
Since its founding in 1996, the UMDF has worked to promote research and education in the hopes of finding a cure for Mitochondrial Disease. To date, the foundation has funded nearly $13 million dollars in research, making it the largest non-governmental contributor of grants focused on Mitochondrial Disease.
The UMDF holds an annual symposium for professionals and affected patients/families, coordinates support and educational activities across the nation through volunteers, and spreads awareness to the professional medical community through our Grand Rounds program. The UMDF connects affected individuals/families. The UMDF Mission: To promote research and education for the diagnosis, treatment, and cure of mitochondrial disorders and to provide support to affected individuals, and families.
