Weekly roundup: Resident takes the crown in national pageant, fall season is approaching

Marla Viturello, 43, of Washington Township, was crowned Mrs. U.S.A. Ambassador, a national title which will launch her efforts in raising awareness for Gift of Life organ transplant donations.

While residents begin to mark their calendars with approaching fall festivities, Washington Township resident Marla Viturello was named Mrs. U.S.A. Ambassador. Also, a Turnersville man, 21, took the life of a 31-year-old West Deptford resident after a collision caused by drunk driving. Never too late: ‘Career mom’ wins crown at U.S.A. pageant

After years of judging beauty pageants, including state pageants within the Miss America system, Washington Township resident Marla Viturello decided to take the stage for the first time in her life, earning the crown not only for her state, but also for her country with the title of U.S.A. Ambassador Mrs. in the U.S.A. Ambassador Pageant. In March, Viturello entered the state pageant for the charity-driven organization U.S.A. Ambassador Pageant, held in Toms River, with hopes the exposure would provide an opportunity for her to promote her community service platform, The Gift of Life, in honor of her passed family members. After winning the state title, Viturello moved forward to the U.S.A. competition in Palm Harbor, Fla., where she was named U.S.A. Ambassador Mrs., a national representative.

Drunk driving accident results in death of West Deptford woman

Cathleen LaBance, 31, of West Deptford was killed just after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6, after her 2003 Toyota Solara was struck by Turnersville resident Robert Gardner, Jr., 21, on the Black Horse Pike in the area of Watson Drive. LaBance was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Gardner was not injured in the crash and was placed under arrest. Gardner has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, aggravated manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and operating under a suspended license resulting in death.

Celebrate a new season: Fall events for township community

Before long, the leaves will begin to change color and the temperatures will begin to drop. As summer comes to a close, Washington Township residents will soon have the opportunity to celebrate the fall season with various activities, festivals and spooky Halloween celebrations. With continued concerts in the park, charitable fundraisers and harvest festivals taking place throughout the upcoming months, there is something for everyone to enjoy this autumn.
