Mt. Laurel Girl Scout pair work for Silver Award by reorganizing historical society’s documents

Alyssa Fleming and Janna Sawyer, two Girl Scouts from Troop 22017, have been diligently working to achieve their Silver Award.

Two Girl Scouts from Troop 22017, Alyssa Fleming and Janna Sawyer, have been diligently working to achieve their Silver Award, the second highest award of the Girl Scouts of the USA, and the highest honor bestowed upon a Girl Scout Cadette.

In order for the Scouts to earn their Silver Award, they two had to identify a problem in their community and work to find a solution.

When the Scouts learned that files and books at the Mt. Laurel Historical Society hadn’t been organized or updated in any significant way since the year it was organized in 1970, the girls got to work.

The worked for approximately 50 hours until they succeeded in creating an organized reference area for the people of Mt. Laurel to learn more about their town.

While sifting through books and documents from the Mt. Laurel Historical Society, the girls encountered various articles with topics ranging from local genealogy to the now defunct Women’s Club, to old newsletters from Rancocas Woods.

Throughout the service project, the two Girl Scouts organized the books by topic and articles by town/topic.

They even created binder dedicated to newspaper articles featuring Mt. Laurel native and women’s suffragist, Alice Paul, and they started a book section just for kids.

The girls also replaced the deteriorating sheet protectors in all of the binders so the articles will lay flat and are easier to read.

Alyssa and Janna also sorted hundreds of books into appropriate shelves and moved countless articles into their own binders until the society’s files had a complete makeover.

Even magazines have been sorted into holders so that the information can be easily found.

Alyssa and Janna, each currently a freshman at Lenape High School, will be in attendance at the Mt. Laurel Historical Society meeting on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. to explain what they did to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award.
