Letter to the editor: ‘Fountain of misfit toys’

Residents upset after fun project is damaged

I live in Whitman Square on a corner property. We have a small fountain on the corner of the lawn. Since the early summer, the neighborhood preschoolers have been stopping by and placing their own “unwanted” toys around the fountain.

We had an old alligator toy that we didn’t want to throw away and we placed it near the fountain, moving it daily (alligator on the shelf). The children were coming by and would look for the alligator and were excited that every day it was in a different spot.

Then, it started with a few more toys the children were adding themselves, thus the name “fountain of misfit toys.”

Some of the adults actually bought some water type animals — frog, turtle, sharks — and it continues to grow. Some of the children come by two to three times a day to see what’s been added and where their toys are each day. My husband has taken to moving them around daily. It is fun for us, and the little ones love it.

This morning, we noticed all the toys were thrown around, some in the water, and some even broken. We are heartsick. This has been such a fun activity for these children and now because of some inconsiderate persons, we don’t know what to do. My husband spent all morning putting everything back, but we are worried that whoever is responsible for this despicable act will now continue to ruin it for the tiny ones in the neighborhood.
