Monday, July 24 through Friday, July 28, 33 Washington Township youth, ages 11 to 14, joined the Washington Township Police Department for the annual Junior Police Academy. Students learned about and participated in police operations, training, K-9 units and more. Pictured, students practiced baton techniques, as well as witnessed a gun simulation.

Washington Township Board of Education approved Source4Teachers as the substitute teacher service for the 2017–18 school year, while also making adjustments to the approved budget due to a decrease in state aid funding. Mayor Joann Gattinelli presented a state of the township to the public at last week’s council meet, reviewing the administration’s progress within its first six months. Also, the Washington Township Municipal Golf Course received grooming and maintenance, enhancing the grounds and play for residents of all ages and skill level. BOE names new WTHS assistant principal, awards bid for substitute teaching service

The Board of Education awarded a one-year contract with Source4Teachers as a temporary certified substitute teacher service for the 2017–18 school year, while naming Bunker Hill Middle School Assistant Principal George Passante as the new assistant principal for the Washington Township High School nine-10 wing, replacing John Saverase, who was recently promoted to executive assistance principal for the 11–12 wing. Also at the meeting, the board approved a budget adjustment plan for the loss of $1,002,306 in state aid for the 2017–18 school year. The plan reduced spending in appropriations such as construction services and capital projects, including the Orchard Valley Middle School roof. The adjustments brought the $149.6 million budget down to $148.6 million.

Mayor Joann Gattinelli addresses State of the Township at council meeting

At last week’s council meeting, Mayor Joann Gattinelli presented a “State of the Township” address, reviewing the new administration’s progress and goals during the first six months of her term. Transparency, taxes and municipal budgets, quality of life, business and community programs were just some of the topics Gattinelli discussed with the public.

Washington Township Municipal Golf Course revamped, open to residents of all ages

The Washington Township Municipal Golf Course has received a number of improvements to the grounds and equipment, upgrading the quality of play and appearance for golfers and guests. In-house reconstruction to bunkers known to hold a lot of water, as well as grass maintenance, dead tree removal, improvement of the greens and rough, as well as new equipment purchases were vital in revamping the condition of the course. The nine-hole, three-par course located on Fries Mill Road originally opened in the 1960s. Golfers of all ages and skill level are welcome year-round from dusk until dawn.

Teacher brings flower power to nursing homes and care facilities through non-profit

Bells Elementary School music teacher Leona Davis has found a way to bring a different kind of joy to a different generation through her non-profit floral repurposing service “Forget Me Knot Flowers.” Now 1,000 bouquets in, blooms of joy have been distributed to a number of organizations in the tri-state area.
