Garofola retired as the chief radiation therapist at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital after a nearly 40-year career.

According to ASRT, her volunteer work for the ASRT has included service as a national chapter delegate and membership on numerous committees. In 2011, she was named an ASRT Fellow and was honored with the ASRT Award for Outstanding Grass-roots Advocacy.

ASRT represents the health care professionals who perform medical imaging procedures or plan and deliver radiation therapy. With more than 153,000 members, its mission is to advance and elevate the medical imaging and radiation therapy profession and to enhance the quality and safety of patient care.

“To be included among such distinguished previous recipients is awe-inspiring, personally, and professionally gratifying, but truly a humbling experience,” Garofola said. “To me radiation therapy was never just a job, even a rewarding one. I was deeply concerned about the safety of my patients and the future of the profession and consider my most important and enduring contribution the mentoring of prospective radiation oncology students.”
