Township To Extend Bike Lane

The bike lane will be extended to include Lower Landing Road

Francesca Collins The Sun: The bike lane ends at Atlantic Ave and Brown Ave.

At Gloucester Township’s council meeting on July 10, the bike lane’s expansion was discussed at length along with state aid that has been provided.

The Gloucester Township bike lane is 2.7 miles. It starts at Brown and Atlantic avenues and runs south to Main Street at Glenloch Lake. The township plans to expand the bike lane down Lower Landing Road.

Councilman Orlando Mercado said the expansion is to try to connect Glendora to the rest of Gloucester Township via the bike lane. He said the township has tried to add a little to the bike lane every year for the past 13 years.

The township originally requested $294,000 in state aid but was granted $284,000. This money will go toward extending the bike lane onto Lower Landing Road. The money will ensure a good chunk of the expansion is completed. According to council, the state aid will help complete three-quarters of a mile to an entire mile of the bike lane.

The state aid will go toward micro-surfacing the extension of the bike lane — a process of adding a layer to the already existing black-top. This added layer is a mixture of water, asphalt emulsion, aggregate (very small crushed rock) and chemical additives.

As outlined by the Camden County Bicycling and Multi-Use Trails Plan, the goals of bike and multi-use lanes are to improve connections to important local destinations such as schools, transit, commercial districts and employment centers; define spaces and bring awareness to local points of interest; provide additional recreation opportunities by linking pedestrians and bicyclists to parks and open space, bodies of water and other outdoor amenities; and increase safety for all users by using uniform signage and identifying standards for facility designed maintenance.

The bike lane expansion is expected to be completed in the following months.
