Spelling their way to success

Valora Wong wins annual seventh-grade VMS Spelling Bee

The annual seventh-grade Voorhees Middle School Spelling Bee took place on Friday, June 9, with more than 30 competitors.

This was the 27th year for the bee, and it was its most competitive with 22 students — the most ever — making it out of the morning rounds to continue in the afternoon where the atmosphere remained intense until Valora Wong emerged as the 2017 champion.

The other top five finishers were Gabriel Robayo in second place, Mrunal Bhalero in third place, Kartik Vijayapuri in fourth place and Claire Sklar in fifth place.

These top five received varying monetary awards thanks to donations from the Hardenbergh Insurance Group, The Tutoring Club, and Morris J. Cohen and Co., P.C. All participants received a $5 Target gift card courtesy of the PFA.

In addition to those awards, Valora received a trophy (courtesy the PFA) and five-pound Hershey chocolate bar, and Gabriel received a one-pound chocolate bar (chocolate courtesy of the magazine drive individuals).
