Evesham Police share tips to keep pets safe during the warm summer months

Police warn that if residents think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter those residents’ pets.

The Evesham Township Police Department is reminding residents during the summer months to remember the safety of their pets.

With that goal in the mind, the department is sharing the following tips with residents in the hopes of keeping furry friends safe this summer:

· Never, ever leave a dog in the car alone

· Always ensure that dogs have unlimited access to fresh water

· Make sure dogs can access shade when outside

· Take dogs on walks during the cooler hours of the day

· When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like asphalt) as it can burn a dog’s paws

· If residents think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter for a resident’s pet, so ensure that pets have a means of cooling off

· Keep dogs free of external parasites (fleas, ticks) and heartworms and consult veterinarians about the best product for pets

· Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to veterinarian first to see if it’s appropriate for a specific pet), and apply sunscreen to a dog’s skin if she or he has a thin coat.
