Markeim Arts Center seeking “outsider” artists

Markeim Arts Center is currently accepting submissions to the “Outsider Art” professional and amateur exhibition opening Friday, June 16.

Markeim Arts Center will present the “Outsider Art” exhibition from Friday, June 16 through Friday, July 14. The professional and amateur exhibition is designed to bring the larger community together through art and to shine a spotlight on those that create and thrive outside of the mainstream.

Markeim is currently looking for entries. The Arts Center is looking for work that is created by: professional artists that depict nontraditional subject matter or use unorthodox media; trained artists that make their primary living outside of the art world and untrained and amateur artists

The featured guest artist will be Steven Spencer. Spencer is a successful artist and art teacher, but early in his career he was the embodiment of an “Outsider” artist. He lived on the streets of Philadelphia, creating drawings for people in Rittenhouse Square to earn what little money he could.

On Friday, June 16, from 5 to 7:00 p.m., Markeim will host a private artist-only reception for the participating artists and their guests. Later on Friday, June 16, from 7 to 10 p.m., the public can join Markeim for a special catered event. Tickets are required.

Reception will include live music, catered food and open bar. There will be a special presentation given by Lucy DuBose and artist Steven Spencer. An art auction may follow.

Proceeds from this event will go to four area non-profits: Fellowship House of Souther Camden, Faces of Change, Rotary Club of Haddonfield and Markeim Arts Center. A portion of the ticket price may be tax deductible.

Tickets are $30 each and a pair are $50. Participating artists may attend for free, but tickets are required for all guests.
