Washington Township police officer assaulted at DMV

The aggressor was arrested for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Washington Township Police Officer Allen Franchi was working an extra duty assignment at the Division of Motor Vehicles on April 18, when he was assaulted by a 30-year-old, male, from Hammonton.

According to the police report, Franchi was alerted there was a fight in the parking lot by a citizen, who ran inside the building. When Franchi went outside, he observed numerous individuals yelling at each other. He was then pushed while speaking with one of the individuals involved.

Police said when the aggressor was advised he was under arrest, he placed his hands around Franchi’s neck and a struggle ensued. Franchi made numerous, repeated announcements to comply but none were met by the male.

Several private citizens, as well as a few DMV employees, came to Franchi’s aid and assisted in taking the man into custody.

Franchi was treated at Kennedy Memorial Hospital for numerous abrasions and was released a short time later.

The assailant was processed on numerous charges including aggravated assault, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was released pending court.
