Weekly Roundup: Township to pass cost of school cops to district, police fight distracted driving

A cleanup event has also been scheduled at the Black Run Preserve for April 29.

This week Evesham’s elected officials said the Evesham Township Board of Education must start paying the full cost of stationing police officers in the district’s schools, the police department launched a distracted driving enforcement campaign and a cleanup event have been scheduled at theBlack Run Preserve for April 29. Evesham Township to pass cost of School Resource Officer program to school district

As Evesham Township begins to outline next year’s municipal budget, mayor and council say the township will no longer fund the School Resource Officer program that stations police officers throughout schools in the Evesham Township School District. If the program continues for the 2017–2018 school year, the township’s elected officials say the school district will be responsible for the full $500,000 required to pay for the seven, full-time officers at each of the district’s school buildings.

Evesham Police join statewide ‘UDrive, UText, UPay’ distracted driving enforcement campaign

Those driving through Evesham Township in the next few weeks had better be sure to have both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road if they want to avoid stern conversations and fines from police. The warning comes as the Evesham Township Police Department kicked off its participation in New Jersey’s ongoing “UDrive, UText, UPay” enforcement campaign. Through April 21, Evesham Police are increasing efforts to target drivers who police see exhibit distracting behaviors while behind the wheel, such as talking with a cell phone in their hands or texting.

Evesham resident sworn-in as new Burlington County Prosecutor

Evesham resident Scott A. Coffina has been sworn-in as Burlington County Prosecutor. Upon his swearing-in, Coffina immediately identified gun violence and the illegal use of opioids as among the concerns that will be priorities under his watch as the county’s top law enforcement officer. Coffina was administered the oath of office in a private ceremony by the Hon. Ronald E. Bookbinder last week.

Cleanup event scheduled at Black Run Preserve for April 29

Evesham residents can once again join the annual cleanup event at the Black Run Preserve on April 29. Often described as the gateway to the Pinelands, Evesham’s Black Run Preserve encompasses nearly 1,300 acres of preserved land in the southern half of the township where flora and fauna native to the Pine Barrens thrive in the area’s naturally low nutrient levels and low levels of pH. As spring gets underway each year, Evesham’s Clean Communities program puts out a call for nature lovers to help spruce up the Black Run Preserve before more visitors head there in the late spring and summer.

Evesham Township School District first grade round up for 2017–2018 school year set for April 25

On April 25, the Evesham Township School District will be having its first grade round up. This day is designated to registering any incoming first grader who will be new to the district for the 2017–2018 school year. Registrations will occur at any time throughout the school day at residents’ neighborhood/home school, with no appointments necessary.
