Local Boy Scouts earn Eagle Scout rank

Kevin Leonard and Ryan Hicks earned the rank of Eagle Scout after years of Boy Scout involvement and community service projects

Kevin Leonard, 18, and Ryan Hicks, 17, from Turnersville, recently earned the Eagle Scout rank after completing community service projects within the state. The two joined Cub Scout Pack 57 as Tiger Cubs and together went to Boy Scouts Troop 123 in Washington Township where their adventures began.

Leonard served as a den chief for Pack 289 in Glassboro, while Hicks served as a camp counselor and merit badge instructor at BSA Camp Minsi in Pennsylvania. Hicks is also part of the camp’s Venturing Crew. Leonard and Hicks each earned 45 merit badges.

Leonard’s Eagle Scout project involved refurbishing a deck on the rectory at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Turnersville. The rectory is the home for their priest and required much needed repairs. He directed scouts, leaders and other volunteers in the deconstruction, repair and reconstruction of the decking, seating and railing of the deck.

Hick’s provided improvements to The New Jersey Nature Center in Delmont for his Eagle Scout project. Several new cages and animal enclosures were constructed to relieve the overcrowded habitat, while supplies and food were collected and donated to help reduce the operating cost of the center.

Hick’s led a group of scouts, leaders and volunteers to mill the wood and prefabricated all of the enclosures where they were loaded into trucks and trailers to assemble them at the nature center.

An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was celebrated on March 19.
