Grace Yoon wins 100 breaststroke at NJSIAA Meet of Champions

Cherry Hill East swimmers also made the “A” final in three other events at the Meet of Champions.

Cherry Hill High School East freshman Grace Yoon put her name on the high school swimming map over the weekend when she won the individual title in the 100 breaststroke at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions.

Yoon, one of the key swimmers for Cherry Hill East girls swimming’s 2017 sectional championship team, bested Rachel Maizes of Scotch Plains-Fanwood by 0.17 seconds to win race. It is Yoon’s first individual state championship at the high school level.

Yoon also made the final of 200 individual medley. She finished in third place with a time of 2:05.66, just 1.4 seconds behind first place Sarah Hardy of Bishop Ahr.

On the boys side, Cherry Hill East senior Kevin Gillooly came just short of winning a state title in the 50 freestyle. Gillooly finished the final race in third place with a time of 21.14 seconds. He finished 0.43 seconds behind first place Justin Liu of Mainland Regional High School.

Cherry Hill East boys swimming also made the finals in the 200 medley relay, finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:36.40.
