Tabernacle Elementary Students take part in Read Across America Week

Tabernacle Elementary School celebrated Read Across America week recently. The event, a project originally started by the National Education Association, focuses on the enjoyment of reading and having children learn the importance of reading.

The week was organized by Stacy Ehrlinger, the reading specialist at Tabernacle Elementary.

“It is exciting,” Ehrlinger said. “It is a weeklong thing. It’s great because a lot of the year we focus on reading and learning to read, especially with my position. This week focuses on the enjoyment of reading and the fun of reading. For me, this is the highlight of my year. This week is my Super Bowl. It all builds to our assembly, and the kids get really excited about reading.”

As part Read Across America Week at Tabernacle, students took part in themed days such as “Mustache Monday,” where students wore mustaches, “Fox in Socks,” where students wore unique socks, “Day and PJ Day,” where students wore pajamas to school.

“I think it is outstanding,” Superintendent Glenn Robbins said. “It is important to bring in different individuals to read to these children such as the state police, other educators, parents and so forth to show them how important reading is.”
