Voorhees Committee approves ordinance on second reading to dissolve Voorhees Fire District No. 3

This second vote comes after the township spent several months of investigating claims of safety and fiscal mismanagement against the district. According to the committee and special counsel Stuart Platt, the administrative transition is actively taking place and the fire department and emergency medical services are continuing as is, without any breaks in service. Union Chief Keith Kemery, International Association of Firefighters Local №3249, spoke on behalf of the full-time paid fire officer and emergency medical technicians and said they fully support the consolidation and thanked the township committee.

John Doherty excited as Eastern Regional High School’s new head football coach

The Voorhees resident had great success when he coached at Paul VI High School from 2003–2015, and was Eastern’s defensive coordinator last season. Doherty replaces Daniel Boguszewski, who resigned in January. “My goal is without a doubt to make the playoffs,” he said. “Just like in life, you have to shoot higher in case you don’t land. You shoot for the moon; you might land on the stars. I think we have the ability. It’s not going to come easy, but it’s definitely a goal that’s achievable.”

E.T. Hamilton Elementary School students’ creativity put on display at Board of Education meeting

The school’s fifth grade orchestra performed “Here Comes the Sun.” Students sang as they played the ukuleles and violins while Matt Totora played the piano. Audience members also participated and sang the chorus. Additionally, rnrichment program director Sandi D’Amico presented her coding and robotics program, where she incorporated robotics learning into the curriculum by using Sphero robotic balls.

The gift of a good book

12-year-old Charlotte Olsen donated more than 1,300 books to Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper University Health Care and raised $220 for new books to be purchased. Charlotte was inspired by the national Reach Out and Read program, a “nonprofit organization that gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together.”

Short Hills Restaurant and Deli in Cherry Hill is preparing to re-open in early spring. The restaurant is undergoing a reconstruction project more than seven months after a fire shut down the eatery last July.
