This spring musical will hit the stage the first week in March.
A musical mystery and comedy is making its way to the Moorestown High School stage. For this year’s annual spring musical, the MHS theater invites the community to witness its presentation of the Broadway musical, “Curtains.”
Celebrating its 10th anniversary since opening on Broadway, this musical features a familiar “whodunit” murder mystery concept and tells the story of how a law enforcement officer comes to investigate the death of a hapless start on opening night during her curtain call performance. From there, additional homicides begin to arise, and it is made clear someone does not wish to see “the show go on.”
MHS sophomore Lauren Clark will be playing the leading lady who dies, and junior Dean Blizzard has assumed the role of Lt. Frank Cioffi, who investigates her death. Blizzard admits he is excited to be playing the role of Cioffi because it gives him the opportunity to express his love of the show through a fun and interesting character.
As the show continues, Blizzard’s character falls in love with “the show’s good-hearted ingénue,” Niki Harris, played by sophomore Carlie MacMillian, and Cioffi becomes passionate not only in his investigation, but in the success of the show as well.
“Curtains will leave you laughing endlessly and the musical numbers will inspire you to sing and dance along with everyone,” MacMillian said. “So many people have put so much hard work and love into this show and we would love to share our amazing production with many people.”
Helping to make the production a success, students, Mira Mookerjee, James Adams, Elena Iliadis, Skylar Raye Noyes, Jeff Scott, Rohan Wadhwa, Sam Scheibe and Garrett Walsh will all be playing suspects. To find out who committed the crimes, community will have to come out to the show to see for themselves.
“‘Curtains’ is one of those shows that is just so ridiculously hilarious that it’s impossible not to fall in love with it,” Mookerjee said. “There are many reasons to come: the witty ’50s inspired jokes, the captivating mystery surrounding the plot and the lessons we can learn from the characters’ relationships.”
Also included in the hard working contributors of this performance are director and choreographer Erica Scanlon Harr, vocal director Sergey Tkachenko, orchestra director Greg Connlain and scenic designers Brian Froonjian and Kirsten Sheetz. Additionally lighting design is under the direction of Dee Dugan and Chris Miller, costumes are coordinated by Katie Keith — with more costumes being utilized this year than in any MHS musical before — hair and makeup coordinated by Marilyn Scanlon, sound design established by Joseph Masciangelo and business management conducted by Greg Harr.
All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will take place on Thursday, March 2, Friday, March 3, Saturday, March 4, Friday, March 10 and Saturday March 11. There will also be a special matinee performance for senior citizens on Wednesday, March 8 at noon.
