Mayor Michelle Arnold announced last week she has been chosen to serve as a member on the 2017 International Outreach Committee for the National Foundation for Women Legislators.

“I have been appointed to a leadership position for this national organization,” Arnold said at the February council meeting. “I have been selected to serve the nation’s oldest nonpartisan organization addressing the needs of elected women in all of the city, county and state levels of government.”

The NFWL “empowers and inspires elected women to become thought leaders who shape America’s future,” according to the National Foundation for Women Legislators, a nonprofit organization that provides resources and ideas to elected women through conferences, relationships and networking, and encourages the election and appointment of women to public office.

Arnold is the first Republican woman to ever be elected mayor of Palmyra.

“It was a pleasure to be chosen,” Arnold said.

• Cub Scout Pack 9 attended last week’s council meeting after spending some time with the mayor to earn a new badge. The pack led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Arnold recognized the pack members during the Community Spotlight portion of the meeting.

• An ordinance was passed to make the intersection at West Charles Street and Park Avenue a multi-stop intersection. This ordinance was implemented to make it safer for Charles Street School students to cross the street before and after school.

• Joe Ventura, a barber at Tony’s Barber Shop in Palmyra, shared his ideas for the Palmyra mural that is planned for one of the barber shop walls. Ventura would like to use the mural to honor Palmyra’s history, including the police department, fire department and the barber shop that has been in Palmyra for more than 50 years.

Arnold agreed with Ventura and said she would also like to incorporate some ideas from artistic students in the borough.

The next council meeting will be held on March 20 at 7 p.m.
