High school sports playoff update: Cherry Hill East boys bowling advances to states for second straight year

The Cougars finished in second place in Saturday’s South Jersey Group IV tournament to punch its ticket to Friday’s state finals.

For the second consecutive year, Cherry Hill High School East boys bowling will be going to the NJSIAA state tournament.

The Cougars finished second in Saturday’s South Jersey Group IV tournament with a score of 3,149. Cherry Hill East finished second to sectional champion Shawnee, punching their ticket to the team finals and Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick on Friday.

The Cougars will also have a participant in Wednesday’s individual state tournament. Freshman Anthony Mathis recorded a 711 series on Saturday to qualify for the tournament. Mathis finished in eighth place in South Jersey. The top-18 individuals from South Jersey advanced to the state tournament.

Lipko heading to individual state tournament for Cherry Hill West

Cherry Hill High School West boys bowling finished in ninth place in the South Jersey Group III tournament on Saturday, but the team will have a representative at the state individual tournament this week.

Joshua Lipko’s 673 series was good enough for the 15th best score in South Jersey, earning him a spot in Wednesday’s individual state tournament.

This is the second straight year a Lion bowler has gone to the individual state tournament. Last year, Dean Bongiovanni finished in 27th place at the state level.

Cherry Hill East boys and girls swimming kick off postseason this afternoon.

After receiving byes through the first two rounds of the sectional playoffs, Cherry Hill East boys and girls swimming will compete in their first playoff matchups this afternoon.

The boys swimming team will begin their sectional title defense this afternoon against №4 seed Eastern Regional High School at 3:30 p.m. The Vikings defeated №5 seed Atlantic City, 99–71, last week in the South Jersey Group A quarterfinals. The winner this afternoon will advance to the sectional finals on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Gloucester Tech.

The girls swimming team will host №5 seed Southern Regional High School this afternoon in their South Jersey Group A semifinal matchup. Southern upset №4 seed Eastern, 90–80, last week to advanced to the semifinals. The winner of today’s meet will compete in the sectional finals Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Gloucester Tech.
