Weekly roundup: Fire chief talks about upcoming election, WTHS wrestler highlights his 100th win

Fire Chief Patrick Dolgos discussed department budget and election, while senior Evan Fisler celebrated his 100th victorious wrestling match. On Super Bowl Sunday, the Helping Hands Hoagie Sale raised more than $50,000 for local families in need. Check out some of the top stories from the past week in the Weekly Roundup.

Annual hoagie sale surpassed previous years, earned national recognition

This year’s Helping Hands Hoagie Sale raised more than $50,000 for local families with serious illnesses and medical setbacks after selling upwards of 5,000 hoagies. The monumental success of this year’s sale brings the hoagie sale total to $598,000 in all-time funds raised. The sale, sponsored by the Changing Our World Project, WTHS Students in Action and the district’s three middle school Future Acts clubs, was also successful in donating hundreds of hoagies to local homeless organizations.

Fire Chief Patrick Dolgos said the district is proud of the decrease in budget for the 2017 fiscal year, being $4,000 below last year.

Washington Township Fire District elections to be held Feb. 18

At the upcoming fire district elections, residents will be voting on the district’s budget, two Board of Fire Commissioners seats, and a special question authorizing a new truck. The proposed budget would decrease the tax rate by .001 cent. Fire Chief Patrick Dolgos also discussed new, creative strategies to recruit and retain volunteers.

WTHS senior wrestler Evan Fisler hits 100th career win

After months of physical therapy and recovery from last year’s back injury, Washington Township High School senior wrestler Evan Fisler won his 10oth match again Eastern High School. Fisler is the 17th Minuteman to join the 100-win club. Fisler looks forward to district tournaments next week as it is the first step in making it to states.

District Teacher of the Year goes to Wedgwood Elementary teacher

Wedgwood Elementary School fifth-grade basic skills math teacher Domenick Renzi was awarded District Teacher of the Year. Renzi has spent his entire 21 years of teaching in Washington Township public schools, and has been a recipient of two Teacher of the Year honors as well as a nomination for Disney’s American Teacher Awards.

“The Wit and Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln” presented at Heggan library

On Wednesday, Feb. 8 the Margaret Heggan Free Public Library hosted a first-person interpretation covering the details of Abraham Lincoln’s life and the Civil War. Presented by Bob Gleason with the American Historical Theatre, the program covered the president’s formative years, his courtship and marriage, the beginnings and development of his abolitionist viewpoint, and his first trip to Congress.
