Celebrate Black History Month, take in some magical comedy and more
The Super Bowl isn’t the only event taking place this weekend. There are plenty of activities to enjoy all around the Philadelphia region. Take a look at some of the events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Around South Jersey
- Residents can kick off Black History Month on Saturday with the first film in the Cherry Hill Public Library’s Black History Month film series. The library will be screening “Akeelah and the Bee” beginning at 2 p.m. in the conference center. The film is free to attend and open to the public. For more information, visit www.chplnj.org.
- A grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4. Come celebrate the museum’s new permanent location at Historic Smithville Park. Visitors can also check out the Black History Month exhibit and take in live music and poetry.
- Get a glimpse at some beautiful jewelry on Saturday night at the Katz JCC. The JCC is hosting its Jay Roberts Jewlers Jewelry Extravaganza beginning at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy cocktails and hour d’oeurves while browsing over beautiful jewelry. Attendees will have a chance to win a David Yurman bracelet. The event is free and open to the community. - Community members can enjoy a hour of magic and comedy for a good cause in Palmyra at Magic and Merriment, a magical comedy and variety show for all ages. The show will take place on Saturday at the Palmyra High School auditorium beginning at 1 p.m. This two-person comedy magic and variety act show will include juggling, magic, escapes, family-friendly sideshow acts, audience participation and a ton of laughs. Tickets are $10 for adults at the door and $8 for children 7 and under. Advance ticket sales benefit the American Cancer Society. For more information, visit www.magicandmerriment.com.
- Miss out on Groundhog Day on Thursday? Celebrate the holiday all over again at the Harrison Township Historical Society’s annual Groundhog Day Dinner and Silent Auction. The event will take place on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. at the village of Ewan Fire Hall. The event will feature a home-cooked menu with sausage links, sausage gravy and biscuits, cole slaw, mashed potatoes, candied yams, fried apples, green beans, and a dessert buffet. There will also be an emcee decked out in tails and a top hat, silent auction and a chance to sing Groundhog Day songs. Tickets are $15 per person. All proceeds benefit the historical society’s exhibitions and programs. The fire hall is located at 312 Ewan Road in Mullica Hill. At the Jersey Shore
- In Long Beach, kick off Super Bowl Sunday with a plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. The St. Francis Community Center in Long Beach Township is hosting its 13th annual Super Plunge Sunday on Sunday at 1 p.m. The cost to participate is $35 for adults and $20 for students. Registration is open at the community center, 4700 Long Beach Boulevard, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday. The plunge will take place at the 48th Street beach. All proceeds will benefit the community center and the Southern Regional High School swim teams. - Celebrate the Chinese New Year at Reading Terminal Market on Saturday. A slew of events and demonstrations will take place throughout the venue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will demonstrations, entertainment and food honoring Chinese culture. - Each first Sunday of the month, The Barnes Foundation, located at 2025 Ben Franklin Pkwy. in Philadelphia, offers free admission and programs. Visitors can attend talks, performances and participate in hands-on activities.
