Evesham Police ‘Project Medicine’ box collects more than half ton of unwanted medications in 2016

The box is located in the lobby of the Evesham Township Police Department.

Evesham Chief of Police Christoper Chew and the Evesham Township Police Department have announced that the ETPD has collected more than a 1,000 pounds of unwanted medications in 2016 from Evesham Residents.

According to police, throughout the year the department’s “Project Medicine Drop” box helped area residents dispose of 1,033 pounds of unwanted, unused, or expired medications.

For those who need to dispose of unused medicines, they can use the box, located in the lobby of police headquarters, 24 hours a day, seven days.

According to police, expired and unused prescription medications are often left lying in medicine cabinets and cupboards. This leads to their potential misuse and abuse. Adults and seniors may inadvertently take expired or unused prescription medications that are no longer effective. This can have dangerous interactions with other medications.

Police say that drugs that have been prescribed to treat a medical condition, or ones that are sold over-the-counter, may not be safe for everyone. Safe disposal of unused and expired drugs ensures they do not end up in the wrong hands.

Police report that the “Project Medicine Drop” box installed at the Evesham Police Department in February 2015 has been proving to be “hugely successful” in providing a safe way for the town’s residents to dispose of unused medications.

Members of the public are invited to visit the Project Medicine Drop site and drop off any unused prescription medications anonymously and with no questions asked.
