Year in Review: Evesham mourns loss of singer Christina Grimmie

Grimmie was shot and killed June 10 after a concert in Orlando

Marcus Grimmie, the brother of slain Marlton native and nationally known singer Christina Grimmie, speaks about his sister before hundreds of mourners during a candlelight vigil held near the Evesham Municipal Complex on June 13.

Marlton lost one its brightest stars when Christina Grimmie succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted by a man claiming to be a fan on June 10 during a meet and greet after a concert in Orlando, Fla.

In the days, weeks and months that followed, countless family members, friends, fans and other celebrities mourned Grimmie’s death, many recounting her positive attitude, welcoming personality and strong Christian faith.

Grimmie first gained national attention with videos she posted to YouTube in 2009 in which she performed covers of popular songs. The videos reached millions of views, and Grimmie would eventually start to tour with other musicians throughout the country in the following years.

In 2014, Grimmie gained further attention through her appearances on NBC’s singing contest “The Voice,” where she finished in third place.

When speaking to The Sun in January 2011, just as she was headed to Los Angeles to audition for record deals, Grimmie said she still didn’t fully comprehend her quick rise to stardom.

“It’s already a big deal, and I thank God for that every day,” Grimmie said. “It’s very much a big deal for me, and I wake up in the morning and think, is this really happening to me? I’m just a normal 16-year-old girl who loves video games and my fans.”
